I am now slowly getting back into the swing of things following my summer sabbatical. I studied Neolithic remains in various parts of the UK, particularly The Orkneys, north Yorkshire, the Lakes and Wales. A lot of the remains are standing stones and these have become linked in the popular imagination with Druids and pagan rituals. It was therefore felt by many people to be an odd subject for a Methodist Minister to look at!
However, the stones predate the Druids by about 2500 years and it is now impossible to work out exactly what the original rituals would have been like. The only certainty is that the landscape and natural resources played an important part and this was my main focus of interest. In the modern world we have become dislocated from the land and the sources of our food. With 'green issues' at the forefront of present discussions I feel it is very necessary for the Christian Church to rediscover its concept of Stewardship. To that end, my thoughts over the 3 months centred on ways of thinking about issues of nature, climate, water resources and food and bringing this whole area into our acts of worship. It is a large topic and I have barely scratched the surface yet, but seeing what our forebears felt to be important and comparing that to consumerism and celebrity culture in the modern world did give one pause for reflection. And that can only be a good thing.
